On the occasion of the 12 th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™ the exhibition "Run, Jump and Throw – Athletics in International Contemporary Art" will be on display in the Berlin City Hall , known as the Rotes Rathaus. The exhibition offers a glance at the handling of the topic in contemporary art and provides an introduction to the aesthetics of art and sport from the vantage point of various cultures. The works of art (painting and photography) depict individual views and aspects of that which artists from diverse continents associate with the World Championships in Athletics in Berlin . All of the works in the exhibit are new creations and are being presented to the public for the first time.
The following contemporary artists are presenting their works:
The Korean photo artist deals with the discipline of the sprint in his work "ebony-tiger". He picks up the Asian art form of body tattoos and puts them in relation to the athletic body of a swarthy sprinter. The same cultural-historical approach can also be seen in the painting by Hisashi Tenmyouya, which depicts a Japanese warrior in traditional battle gear carrying a spear. While Erika Harrsch from Mexico City analyses all of the athletic disciplines through trendy leg figurations, the figures embroidered on screen-print and decorated in gold leaf by the American artist Kent Henricksen are evocative of the Greek Antiquities. This is in contrast to the photomontage by the Italian Alberto Seveso, who utilises stylistic methods from advertising and depicts a runner in front of a dark cloud formation. The examples provided here show the diverse approaches to the topic by the artists and invite one to visit the artistic interpretations of the World Championships in Athletics.
The conception for the exhibition was developed by the agency Brands United together with the Berlin Organising Committee 2009.
A few of the artistic works from the exhibition are part of the line of officially licensed products for the 12 th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™ , which will be available for purchase in the Official Shops at the Olympic Stadium and at the KulturStadion® (Brandenburg Gate). T-shirts, caps, bags and posters with these motifs will be on sale for prices between € 19.90 and € 24.90.
