The IAAF Council has accepted Tuvalu as a full member of the world athletics association. The official approval of this decision will occur during the next IAAF Congress, which will take place within the framework of the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™ in the German capital.

ISTAF as a trial run for berlin 2009

The best athletes in the world will gather next year at the World Championships in the Berlin Olympic Stadium from August 15 -23 to determine the champions in 47 disciplines. The spectators in the capital city have already had the chance to experience many of the upcoming stars at this year’s ISTAF. The most important international meeting on German soil, which in this Olympic year served as the opening event for the Golden League, drew top athletes from around the world to the famous arena with the blue track to vie for the million-dollar jackpot.

457 days before the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™ get underway, the World Championships organising committee has already conducted 700 detailed interviews with those hoping to volunteer. A total of 3,500 volunteers will be needed in 12 different areas for the World Championships in Athletics.

BOC 2009 celebrity relay team starts at the Gutenberg Marathon with 100,000 spectators lining the course in Mainz

On Sunday, May 4, 2008, a celebrity team from the organisational committee for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™ participated in the Gutenberg Marathon and German Marathon Championships in Mainz.

The relay team was led by top runner Irina Mikitenko, one day after she won the German 10000m Championships with a time of 35:57.71.

Effective immediately and in mutual agreement, the Berlin Organising Committee 2009 GmbH (BOC 2009) and Infront Sports & Media are dissolving their existing marketing agreement for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™. In June 2007, Infront was contracted as an external agency responsible for the acquisition of a maximum of five national partners and the eight national promoters/suppliers for berlin 2009™.

The BOC 2009 is Starting the Volunteer Interviews

523 days before the first event of the World Championships in Athletics in Berlin , the berlin 2009™ organising committee (BOC 2009) has begun the interview process for volunteers.

Together with the BOC 2009 staff, during a half-hour discussion the ideal area for volunteering is determined for each individual applicant. This will help to guarantee that all of the spectators, athletes, and support teams can best experience the World Championships, and that the volunteers can enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as well.

Prominent Visitors for the berlin 2009™ Organising Committee

On the opening day of the ITB (Internationale Tourismus Börse) tourism trade show, the mayor of Berlin and the decathlete André Niklaus visited the stand of the World Championships in Athletics at the ITBand inquired personally about the status of the preparations for the World Championships with the managing director of the BOC 2009 organising committee, Heinrich Clausen.

As the mayor of the hosting city-state of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit demonstrated a special interest: “I am looking forward to the excellent sporting event that will be presented to us next year in the Olympic Stadium and can only say: ‘Everyone come to Berlin for the World Championships in Athletics!’”

BOC 2009 Announces Ticket Prices

On April 2, 2008 , exactly 500 days before the first starting shot of the World Championships in Athletics 2009 in Berlin , ticket sales for the most important sporting event of the year will begin. Day tickets will be available starting at 20 euros, while multi-day tickets for the entire event will begin at 350 euros.

There will be three ticket categories for berlin 2009™. In accordance with the IAAF, the BOC 2009 GmbH organising committee will be offering day tickets for the nine days of events in the categories “1” to “3” (see the stadium graphics). Day tickets range from 20 to 75 euros and are good for all of the events for that day in the Olympic Stadium. The exception to this is Tuesday, August 18, 2009 , for which there will be separate morning and evening tickets.

Great Interest in the Preparations for the World Championships

Finland’s Foreign Minister, Ilkka Kanerva, showed a great interest in the preparations for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™ during his visit to the German capital. On the second day of his visit to Berlin, Kanerva inspected the Olympic Stadium, together with the Finish Ambassador, René Nyberg. Heinrich Clausen, managing director of the BOC 2009, and stadium director, Peter von Löbbecke, briefed them on the status of the preparations for the largest sporting event of the year 2009.

Schedule for berlin 2009™ has been set

According to their current athletic performances, the athletes in the German Athletic Association (DLV) will have a chance to win medals on most of days of the World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™ (from Saturday, August 15, 2009 to Sunday, August 23, 2009 ). According to the schedule of events suggested by the organisational committee BOC 2009 and approved by the world athletics association IAAF, the first German athlete to compete will be André Höhne, who will vie for a medal in the 20-km Race Walk in the early morning of the first day of competition, heading down the boulevard Unter den Linden and finishing behind the Brandenburg Gate. On the evening of the opening day, the winners of the men’s Shot Put and of the women’s 10,000 Metres will also be determined in the Olympic Stadium.

10-Euro Commemorative Coin for the World Championship in Athletics 2009

The German Ministry of Finance is supporting the 12th IAAF World Championship in Athletics berlin 2009™ with an unusual measure: On Thursday, German Minister of Finance Peer Steinbrück will be launching an ideas competition for the creation of a 10-euro commemorative coin. This is only the third time in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany that a commemorative coin will be issued for an athletic occasion, following coins created for the Summer Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 and the FIFA World Cup in 2006. What is special in this case is that all Germans are being called to participate in the designing of the silver coin.

Marathon World Record Holder Haile Gebrselassie:

Haile Gebrselassie has achieved his own Marathon dream. With his record-breaking victory at the 34th Berlin Marathon in a time of 2:04. 26, the master of long distances has now mounted the throne of the longest distance race. At the same time, he has already aroused anticipation for the Marathon at the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™. Under ideal conditions, the best time could possibly be surpassed on the Berlin course, which will be four laps of a 10 km loop. A time of 2:03 is possible, the 34-year-old Ethiopian announced, adding: “I am already looking forward to the World Championships. Berlin has always brought me luck, I have always won here.” His next dream could come true during berlin 2009™.

World Championships in Athletics 2009: Wowereit to be presented with the IAAF flag in Osaka

Berlin’s mayor, Klaus Wowereit, is visiting Osaka, Japan, from August 30 to September 2, 2007, for the 11th World Championships in Athletics. Together with Clemens Prokop, the president of the German Athletics Association (DLV) and of the Berlin Organising Committee (BOC 2009), Wowereit will be presented with the IAAF flag during the closing ceremonies on Sunday evening in Japan’s third largest city. This flag will earmark Berlin as the host of the next championship event. The 12th World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™, which will begin on August 15, 2009, is the third most important sporting event in the world (following only the Olympic Games and the Football World Cup).

At the IFA Consumer Electronics Trade Show

The Japanese electronics giant, EPSON, has been supporting international athletics as a partner of the world athletics association, IAAF, for years. When the German capital hosts the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™ in two years, the company will be just as visible as it has been during this year’s world championships in its hometown of Osaka: EPSON will be installing special touch-screen panels throughout the stadium for constant up-to-date access to the results. The BOC 2009, the organisational committee for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™, has secured the support of two renowned former track stars. One day before the end of the world championships in Osaka , Japan , the Berlin delegation, led by the mayor of Berlin , Klaus Wowereit, and DLV President, Dr. Clemens Prokop, presented Heike Drechsler and Frank Fredericks as their new athletic advisors. Both had been active as “ambassadors” promoting Berlin during its candidacy. Their work paid off: Almost three years ago, the world association for athletics, IAAF, awarded the city the right to host the event.

German Athletics Team gets visual training in Kienbaum

Athletes from the German Athletics Association (Deutscher Leichtathletik-Verband (DLV)) will find themselves visually as well as physically well prepared for berlin 2009™, the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics. Sprinters from the DLV tried out the new track, whose colour and surface is identical to the fast lane in the Berlins arena, two years and two weeks before the first starter gun rings out over Berlin’s Olympic stadium. BOC 2009 - Managing Director Henze resigns


Berlin, July 5th, 2007 - Heiner Henze, the original Managing Director of BOC 2009 GmbH, the company responsible for organising the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, berlin 2009™, is to resign from his post. The 66-year old sports official, who is also honorary treasurer of the German Athletics Association (DLV), informed the local organising committee (LOC) and the BOC board of directors on July 4th, 2007, of his decision to resign. This can primarily be put down to the fact that Heiner Henze believes he is not receiving the necessary support and trust from parts of the board of directors and the LOC.

Athletics Remains Western Europe’s Second Favourite Sport

Berlin, June 2007 - Athletics continues to assert itself as the second strongest force - behind football - in the most important European markets. According to a representative survey for the current study “European Football 2007,” which is published by Europe’s leading sports rights marketer Sportfive, 108.32 million of a total of 244.48 million people over the age of 14 in England, France, Italy, Spain, and Germany expressed interest in the core Olympic sport. That means 44 percent of the population. More - namely 133.27 million people or 55 percent - evinced their preference for football.

Contracts signed

BOC 2009 and infront start marketing campaign for berlin 2009

The organising committee for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™ (BOC 2009 GmbH) has set the course; the contracts with the participating licence distributors have been negotiated and signed. Working with the Swiss agency Infront Sports & Media AG, who were appointed as national marketing agency, the BOC has launched the marketing campaign for the third most important sporting event in the world 26 months ahead of the event.

Berlin - Top Location for Major Sporting Events

Berlin, the site of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™, is one of the best locations, ranked only behind Melbourne, Australia and the joint second-place metropolis of Paris and Sydney, but ahead of London, the Olympic venue for 2012. This ranking is the result of an analysis by the London consulting agency ArkSports Ltd. The analysis included assessments of previous events as well as of those being carried out until 2010, with criteria such as sports venues, transportation, accommodation, weather, sustainability of the arrangements, support by the government and administration, the interest of the population in sports, and the quality of life in the city, as well a survey of specialists.

After their almost 48-hour inspection of the German capital, José-Maria Odriozola, the Spanish IAAF Council Member and one of the two Organisational Delegates for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™, and IAAF General Secretary Pierre Weiss (France) headed home calm and satisfied. “We are relieved, but not relaxed,” Odriozola summarised his impressions of the status of the preparations by the BOC 2009 GmbH, which is responsible for the organisation of the event, during the closing press conference. “All facilities such as the hotels and training grounds are ready and in good condition. There are only a few small things that have to be improved—for example, new synthetic tracks in the training stadiums.”

First Inspection in Preparation for the World Championships in Athletics in 2009

Although the final decision is up to the council members of the worldwide association, IAAF, the technical delegates have already voiced support of the plans made by the organisers of the 12th World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009 for the marathon and walking events. According to the ideas of Heiner Henze, the director of the BOC 2009 GmbH, and of his general secretary, Heinrich Clausen, the start and finish of these events are not to be in the stadium, as is usual, but rather the course is to be a circuit through the heart of the capital with all of its important sights.

From November 15-17, 2006, IAAF vice-president Dapeng Lou of China, as the technical delegate, and Carlo de Angeli of Italy, who is a full time inspector from the IAAF main headquarters in Monte Carlo, inspected the current status of the preparations for berlin 2009 for the first time. The IAAF treasurer, Jean Poczobut, who has been nominated by the umbrella organisation as the second technical delegate for the championship events in the Olympic Stadium, was not able to participate due to illness.
