Today, Tuesday, May 26, 2009, the World Championships’ Organising Committee BOC announced sanofi-aventis as the next National Supplier of the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™. The international pharmaceuticals company with an important production and research location in Germany will get involved in the Championships with its diabetes prevention programme.

Laurens Lipperheide, Marketing Director of the World Championships’ Organising Committee, expressed his delight with sanofi-aventis’ involvement in berlin 2009™: “We are pleased to have found a strong partner in sanofi-aventis for educational activities regarding diabetes, which will mostly be present with its programme in the KulturStadion®. Through this involvement, in addition to the entertainment that will be provided at Pariser Platz, we can also contribute to providing education about this widespread disease and show what a positive effect sport can play in prevention.”

As a partner of the KulturStadion®, sanofi-aventis will be creating awareness and educating the visitors in the Berlin city centre through its programme “Knowing what matters with diabetes: More healthy under 7” (‚Wissen was bei Diabetes zählt: Gesünder unter 7‘). “Through the nationwide diabetes awareness and education campaign ‘Knowing what matters with diabetes: More healthy under 7’, we hope to help reduce the number of new cases of diabetes and to optimise the care for diabetics,” stated Dr. Christoph Heinemann, Head of Marketing and Market Access for sanofi-aventis. “It is our primary goal to support patients in dealing with their illness actively and self-reliantly,” Heinemann continued.

Prof. Dr. Peter Schwarz, diabetologist at the University Clinic (Universitätsklinikum) Dresden, described the connection between the World Championships in Athletics and diabetes: “Get moving – that means everyone!” is his motto. “Exercise, and the weight loss that comes with it, is ideal for preventing diabetes. There are no excuses; even little things that one can integrate easily into daily life can reduce the risk of getting diabetes – and they can be fun too! The World Championships stands for top performances, and should serve to motivate the population to get more exercise,” Schwarz added.

Following the introduction of sanofi-aventis, Heinrich Clausen, General Secretary of the World Championships’ Organising Committee, gave the journalists in attendance a tour of the offices of the BOC: “81 days before the start of the World Championships in Athletics, we would like to give the journalists an opportunity today to have a peek behind the scenes of the Organising Committee. The almost 60 employees here in the Olympic Park are working closely with all of our partners in preparation of the Championships.”
