Berlin - Top Location for Major Sporting Events

Author: BOCCurrent events Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Berlin, the site of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™, is one of the best locations, ranked only behind Melbourne, Australia and the joint second-place metropolis of Paris and Sydney, but ahead of London, the Olympic venue for 2012. This ranking is the result of an analysis by the London consulting agency ArkSports Ltd. The analysis included assessments of previous events as well as of those being carried out until 2010, with criteria such as sports venues, transportation, accommodation, weather, sustainability of the arrangements, support by the government and administration, the interest of the population in sports, and the quality of life in the city, as well a survey of specialists.

Melbourne, the organiser of the most recent Commonwealth Games and current venue of the World Championships in Swimming, prevailed with its numerous first-class annual events such as the Formula 1, the MotoGP, and the tennis Grand Slam tournament. The strong support by the city administration also spoke well for the southern Australian metropolis, which accrued 341.5 points in total. Both the French capital and the year 2000 Olympic Host City Sydney each received 312.5 points. Berlin obtained 292 points, thanks to its numerous top events like the World Championships in Beach Volleyball and the Modern Pentathlon, the annual ISTAF Athletics Meeting and the Berlin Marathon as the two most important athletics events, the numerous national sports leagues (Bundesliga) for various sports, and last but not least, the celebrated central venue for the FIFA Football World Cup in 2006 in Germany.

Ranked behind the German capital were cities such as London (287 pts.), Madrid (284.5 pts.), New York (275.5 pts.), Peking - the Olympic stage next year (262.5 pts.), Tokyo (255.5 pts.) and somewhat surprisingly, Cape Town (244 pts.).
