Berlin, July 5th, 2007 - Heiner Henze, the original Managing Director of BOC 2009 GmbH, the company responsible for organising the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, berlin 2009™, is to resign from his post. The 66-year old sports official, who is also honorary treasurer of the German Athletics Association (DLV), informed the local organising committee (LOC) and the BOC board of directors on July 4th, 2007, of his decision to resign. This can primarily be put down to the fact that Heiner Henze believes he is not receiving the necessary support and trust from parts of the board of directors and the LOC. A successor must now be appointed, to whom Henze will transfer his official functions by September 30th.
Born in Breslau, Heiner Henze’s many activities in national and international sports organisations mean he is regarded as one of the country’s most experienced athletics officials. For many years Henze, who trained as a teacher, was General Secretary of the German Athletics Association, and the former National Olympic Committee for Germany and also held the same honorary position for the European Athletics Association. Both the International Olympic Committee and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) have regularly called upon his expertise. Before taking over the management of the BOC, Heiner Henze played a decisive role in the organisation of the 2005 World Games in Duisburg.
