Berlin’s mayor, Klaus Wowereit, is visiting Osaka, Japan, from August 30 to September 2, 2007, for the 11th World Championships in Athletics. Together with Clemens Prokop, the president of the German Athletics Association (DLV) and of the Berlin Organising Committee (BOC 2009), Wowereit will be presented with the IAAF flag during the closing ceremonies on Sunday evening in Japan’s third largest city. This flag will earmark Berlin as the host of the next championship event. The 12th World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™, which will begin on August 15, 2009, is the third most important sporting event in the world (following only the Olympic Games and the Football World Cup).

Says Wowereit: “I am looking forward to Osaka. I will receive the IAAF flag there on behalf of Berlin, the venue for the next World Championships in Athletics in 2009. I will use this opportunity to present the German capital and to invite the 212 national member organisations of the IAAF to Berlin in 2009. Our city is going to be an excellent host.”

During his visit, the mayor is attending competitions in the Nagai Stadium in Osaka. Wowereit also met with the mayor of Osaka, Dr. Junichi Seki, on August 31 and spoke with the managing director for the foreign department for Panasonic, Hitoshi Otsuki. The mayor held a reception for the members of the IAAF in the historical garden “Taiko-En” in the afternoon. On September 1, Wowereit is presenting Berlin to the international press as the venue for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics.

While the IAAF event is going on in Osaka, BOC flags promoting the 2009 World Championships are flying in central locations throughout the German capital: at Ernst-Reuter-Platz, Theodor-Heuss-Platz, at the Victory Column, and in front of the Red City Hall (Rotes Rathaus). With about 300 billboards throughout the city, the company Stroer is also helping to promote the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.
