Haile Gebrselassie has achieved his own Marathon dream. With his record-breaking victory at the 34th Berlin Marathon in a time of 2:04. 26, the master of long distances has now mounted the throne of the longest distance race. At the same time, he has already aroused anticipation for the Marathon at the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™. Under ideal conditions, the best time could possibly be surpassed on the Berlin course, which will be four laps of a 10 km loop. A time of 2:03 is possible, the 34-year-old Ethiopian announced, adding: “I am already looking forward to the World Championships. Berlin has always brought me luck, I have always won here.” His next dream could come true during berlin 2009™.

It could become the 25th World Record that the dream catcher achieves in his career. The planned flat course offers the best conditions for this. Unlike the other championship Marathons to date, the race will neither start nor finish in a stadium. And unlike the Berlin Marathon, the course will not lead throughout the entire city. The Organising Committee BOC 2009 has instead chosen a 10 km loop that will start the runners at the Brandenburg Gate and lead them past the city’s most spectacular sights and prominent spots of the capital four times before finishing back at the city’s most famous landmark. Hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected to come out to watch the runners and to closely follow the development of the race. The worldwide television coverage will help raise international athletics fans’ interest in Berlin and in the World Championships in the German capital.
